FBC Church History, 1984-2010
The 1980s:
First Baptist Church adopted the following mission statement:
In order to glorify God, the family of First Baptist Church of San Angelo, united in love with faith in Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit, do join together (Ephesians 4:2-3)
1) for worshipping the one true God revealed through Jesus Christ in the Holy Bible (Hebrews 10:25)
2) for teaching the truths of the Bible to all ages and equipping them for Christ-like living (Ephesians 4:11-12)
3) for spreading the gospel of Christ both in our community and abroad
(Matthew 28: 19-20)
4) for ministering to the needs of persons both within and beyond the church fellowship (Galatians 6:10)
The 1990s:
FBC began broadcasting the morning worship service on KCRN FM and AM radio. FBC entered into the agreement, which is still in place, with KACB Television (now KSAN) to broadcast the Sunday morning worship service live. First Baptist voted to build a new center education wing and atrium as part of a plan known as Vision 2000. After demolishing the old center wing, ground was broken on the new wing in 1998. In 1999, the United We Build project was launched.
2000-present
Work progressed on the center wing and atrium, with the first Sunday in the newly constructed wing being May 13, 2001. FBC added the Hispanic Mission at 28 N. Chadbourne. Upon the retirement of Dr. McBride, the new fellowship hall was named “The Jerold and Elizabeth McBride Fellowship Hall.” A Strategic Planning Team was appointed to guide FBC to a long-range plan. First Baptist adopted a vision statement and core values. Our vision statement: The First Baptist Church of San Angelo seeks to be a missional community that follows Jesus Christ and shares the message of the Bible as loving, caring servants.
Our core values:
Worship - as we glorify God and are transformed into the image of Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit
Missions - as we express our faith by ministering to the local and global community through prayer, giving and service
Fellowship - as we experience genuine love and compassion for one another and nurture relationships within and between all age groups in the church family
Heritage - as we honor the past and reach to the future
Spiritual Formation - as we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior and we are conformed to the image of our Lord through study and the exercise of spiritual disciplines for the sake of others and ourselves
In 2006, FBC reaffirmed its affiliation with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
After many months of worshipping in the fellowship hall, we returned to our beautifully renovated sanctuary.
